  • Donors require a more comprehensive picture of a nonprofit’s overall efficiency to gauge performance.
  • Charity Navigator works to ensure nonprofit sustainability by evaluating organisations.

What is Charity Navigator?

Charity Navigator is an independent nonprofit that provides an impartial source of information on charitable organisations. The platform has accredited over 8,000 American charities based on reputation among donors.

By and large, numerous factors are considered when determining the ratings. This includes the organisation’s financial stability, the impact the charity has on the people it serves, and the financial transparency of the organisation.

Also, with Charity Navigator, donors receive assistance in choosing the appropriate causes to fund. Essentially, the ratings are considered significant not only because they assist donors in making well-informed decisions, but also because donors use them as a standard to evaluate charities. For instance, if a donor wants to support their local community through giving, they might check to see if any of their neighbours are doing so.

How Charity Navigator Contributes to Nonprofit Sustainability

Donations are essential to nonprofit organisations’ success. However, there is a need to gain the trust of potential donors before organisations can secure these donations.

According to reports, donor confidence continues to record a decline. 66% of American households gave to charities in 2020. Currently, less than half make donations. In other words, roughly 20 million households have ceased to donate. Also, a greater percentage of donors are leaving religious institutions.

Charity Navigator works to ensure nonprofit sustainability by evaluating organisations. This helps to assist donors in finding charities that share their interests and values. To achieve this, a star rating ranging from one to four is assigned to charitable organisations.

Charity Navigator refers to the four elements that make up ratings as “beacons.” The overall numerical score is calculated by taking a weighted average of the beacon scores.

Beacon No. 1: Effects and Outcomes

This beacon examines two aspects:

  • Does the nonprofit succeed in its goals?
  • Is it cost-effectively using its resources?

With the aid of this information, contributors can better appreciate the impact their donation can have on a cause dear to them.

Beacon No. 2: Accountability & Finance

This data is directly obtained from IRS Form 990. Essentially, it informs potential donors that an organisation follows fiduciary and governance best practices and makes prudent use of donations.

Beacon No. 3: Leadership & Adaptability

This beacon looks at a nonprofit’s mission by using publicly available data. By and large, the goal is to ascertain whether a nonprofit has a clear mission and vision as well as a well-thought-out plan in place to carry out that mission.

Beacon No. 4: Culture & Community

This beacon is designed to detect feedback signals to determine the performance of an organisation in the area of listening. It looks at the organisation’s feedback procedures to ascertain how it pays attention to its constituents and then makes use of that input to modify or enhance its programs.

Also, this beacon examines a nonprofit’s equity practices. It looks at how an organisation is being equitable with the people it works with.

Overall, Charity Navigator calculates the organisation’s general score by taking a weighted average of these four beacon scores. Thereafter, donors can obtain a more comprehensive picture of a nonprofit’s overall efficiency by supporting those with a higher beacon count.

Conclusion

In summary, Charity Navigator has both a free and paid version. However, while free users can see the ratings, they are unable to submit reviews or make donations. Paid members on the other hand have access to ratings, and donations, and can submit ratings.
